Today was a great day.
It was cold!! I’ve been waiting for it to be cold! I think anyone that lives near me has been waiting for it to be cold, too, because everyone was wearing scarves and boots. And by everyone, I mean girls. And by cold, I mean sixty-five degrees with a bit of a breeze.
๐
We also started working on comparing and contrasting . . . and adjectives . . . and how-to writing . . . and adding doubles . . . AND we started studying Native Americans which is one of my favorite things to teach.
We study Native Americans in this way:
Some Native Americans lived in teepees.
Some Native Americans lived in hogans.
Etc.
Some Native Americans hunted for food.
Some Native Americans fished for food.
Some Native Americans planted vegetables for food.
Etc.
Etc.
Etc.
Etc.
That’s pretty much what I wrote on my lesson plans.
I feel that the use of Etc. encompasses all things academic and is perfectly acceptable to put on lesson plans.
So, anywho, we don’t dive into specific tribes (that happens in third grade) but we do expose our students to the first Americans in more of a general way.
Today, we made our teeny teepees. All you need is a semi-circle and the reminder to keep the flat part of the circle at the top of their desk before beginning to draw designs. Then you’re all set!
I have blogged about these before. Click {HERE} to check out some other samples.
I have a resource book that I bought at a Teacher Supply Store ages ago that has Native American writing symbols in it. I always make copies for each student and they get to keep it in their desk to refer to during our Social Studies time. Every year, my kids LOVE these symbols so much that they will practice using the symbols whenever they have extra time, too.
You can see the Writing Symbols paper next to this teepee.
Flat part at the TOP! That’s key!
These next two samples are on my stool.
However, the little girl who sits in the desk next to my stool happens to think that the stool is an extension of her desk because I almost never sit on my stool and when I want to, her stuff is on it.
By the way, this is a phenomenon because whoever sits in the desk next to my stool thinks this, too. Whenever I switch students. And from year to year. Does anything like this happen in your class?
I played Native American music while we worked and the kids were SO QUIET.
I highly recommend this album:
The music is BEAUTIFUL!!! I love it. I seriously feel like I need to have this on repeat all throughout the day.
And, as you can see, it’s for massage, sleep, relaxation, spas, and yoga. And, if you know me, I was going for the whole wouldn’t it be great if everyone relaxed and took a little nap during Social Studies time?
You can click the picture or {HERE} to check it out on iTunes. It’s only $4.99.
And that was our day.
How was yours?

One year, my 2nd grade class had a kinder buddy class. We would read together every week, and once a month or so, we would do a fun project. We decided to do a food teepee, with tortillas and icing and all sorts of candies and fun things. So, we tried to do an example, and the kinder teacher could NOT get the teepee to fold right. One of my 2nd graders finally looked at her, folded hers right into a teepee and informed us that we had the teepee upside down. We totally didn't feel stupid at all.

It was cold today in Idaho also, 33 degrees with blowing snow. I love the tepees.
