Happy Happy Happy Saturday and Five for Fraturday! I skipped last week because my Spring Break was so so so amazing, and by amazing, I mean low-key and I didn’t take any pictures except for one. Or two. Or I can’t remember because my break was so so so amazing.
I did blog, though. You can read it {HERE} if you missed it. I sent out a plea asking how to break up with my hair dresser. And I still haven’t so . . . read it and get back to me, m’kay? 🙂
So this is a TERRIBLE picture, although I doubt you need me to tell you that. This is what happens when you’re with three other people who did not grow up with cell phones, much less cell phones that take selfies. We all grew up with actual cameras that took film, and then you had to take said film to get developed, and then you had to wait for them to get developed, and the wait was way more than an hour, let me tell you, and then pretty much all you did while you looked at the pictures was hold your breath and cross your fingers that your eyes were open.
So yeah.
Each one of us said we were not good at taking selfies.
So this is the best we could do.
Any who . . . if you can’t tell, Kerry flew in for the last part of my Spring Break! She came all by herself (I did miss seeing the kids but having her all to myself was a-okay!) and I stayed at my mom’s house for a long weekend. Kerry, my mom, my older sister, Lisa, and I went to go see The Beauty and the Beast. The theater was basically ours because the kids near my mom’s house were not yet on Spring Break, and we went during the middle of the day during the week which is the only way I want to see movies from here on out.
I LOVED LOVED LOVED the movie! LOVED! And it has special meaning for me because back when I was 19 (cameras probably weren’t even invented yet, it was THAT LONG AGO), Steve and I went to see the animated version that had just been released, and he held my hand for the very first time.
I know.
Awww.
He was a teeny bit mad at me when I said my mom and sisters and I might go see it, but since we’ve been married for almost 20 years and divorce is not an option, I went anyway and he got over it. 😉
It’s like we ARE the beauty and the beast.
And he’s the beast, obviously. Just clarifying.
😉
We also celebrated my dad’s 27th birthday.
He’s a funny one.
At least HE thinks so.
🙂
My mom got a Honey Baked Ham, which is like my most favorite ham ever in all the world, especially with chutney, and then made all these kinds of picnic-like sides, such as baked beans, hash brown casserole, deviled eggs, and rolls.
I am the only one in my family who won’t eat deviled eggs.
Because I don’t like eggs.
Bleck.
But my family couldn’t even wait until dinner and were begging my mom to let them have one so everyone ate one before dinner like it was an appetizer.
Like I said, bleck.
Apparently, they are very very very good and my mom is a genius when it comes to deviled eggs.
Any who . . . my older sister’s family wasn’t able to make it so I told Steve that he was on his own for dinner even though he had been planning on coming to my mom’s.
Seriously, I am very nice to Steve. These last two examples just make me look bad.
In a very selfish way, our family wanted it to be just us.
The original six.
So that’s what we did. It was my mom, dad, Lisa, Kerry, and my younger brother, Jason.
And we went on and on about who was supposed to sit where because we had assigned seating growing up (not in a dictatorship type of way, more of in a traditional, stuck in a rut, childish – that’s my seat! sort of way) and we wanted to sit in the correct seats for this original six only dinner.
Then we told old stories and laughed and laughed and laughed, and sat around the table for a very long time, long after our plates were licked clean . . . just sitting there talking and laughing.
It was so fun!!!!!
Here’s another reason I like to spend the weekend at my mom’s.
She spoils me.
She asked if Kerry and I wanted pancakes one morning.
I mean, who says no to pancakes?
Initially, I said no but in a half-hearted aw shucks, you don’t have to go to all that trouble sort of way, to which she replied it was no trouble at all, and the next thing I knew she was putting plates in the oven TO HEAT UP.
She heats the plates.
And she warms up the syrup.
I grew up like this.
And now I cannot ever have cold syrup.
It’s a thing.
And it is a hindrance in my life because most restaurants do not serve heated syrup. And that’s how I take my syrup. When a restaurant server says how do you take your eggs, I say I don’t, gross, but I take my syrup heated, thank you very much.
It’s a problem. I also have to have ice in my drinks, unless it is hot coffee or wine. Other than that, I need ice. I’d rather not drink it if it doesn’t have ice. Even if it’s just water. I’d like ice water, please.
This is all because of my mom.
I wish everyone had a mom like I do.
I really really really do.
I love you, Mom! 🙂
(She reads this. She is probably laughing at most of this.)
I had to be out for a leadership meeting/training/long day type of thing on Thursday this week and I WAS SO SAD ABOUT IT.
I wanted to scrap all the plans I had for that day, and just have the substitute do who-knows-what/who-cares-what, but somehow, we are down to the last 8 weeks of school and there is no time to waste whatsoever at all, and that includes a sub day.
EVERY DAY IS ACCOUNTED FOR.
My team and I mapped out the rest of the year and it looks like I’m probably going to send my kids to second grade with some pieces of the math curriculum JAMMED DOWN THEIR THROATS IN TWO DAYS OR LESS.
I guess I “took too long” covering PLACE VALUE.
Sigh.
How do you move on when you can’t move on BECAUSE YOUR KIDS NEED MORE TIME?
You don’t if you’re me.
Alright.
So that was a very long tangent just to say that my substitute got to introduce our Graphing unit.
Do you know how much I love to teach graphing?
I LOVE IT.
Graphing! Is! Fun!
And the sub got to kick it off.
I just passed the ball and then she got all the glory.
AND THEN.
She got to kick off our Long Ago unit which might just be my all time favorite Social Studies unit EVER. It’s our Open House Theme and we go on a Field Trip about it and we read The Little House on the Prairie picture books that I love so much I could literally sleep with them every night, and when I bring my collection out, I cradle them in my arms and rock them like a baby, and my kids look at me like I’m crazy until they, too, fall in love with these books and then go home and tell their parents that they want to watch some old show from the olden days called Little House on the Prairie.
And my substitute got to read the first book.
It literally hurt my feelings.
And like I said, I wanted to just have a nothing day planned but WE MAPPED OUT THE YEAR and THERE IS NO TIME FOR ANYTHING and as it is, I’m three days behind in the kick off of both the graphing unit and the long ago unit.
The substitute said my class was amazing.
She texted me to tell me.
🙂
And they are.
After my Leadership meeting/training thingamajig, I went to school and picked up the copies for our homework packets. My team ran the copies for me while I was gone BECAUSE THEY ARE THE SWEETEST GIRLS EVER.
I also cleaned up my room a bit and prepped for the next day BECAUSE I AM A NERD and I need to come in every morning knowing that everything is ready to go OTHERWISE I FEEL OUT OF CONTROL and then NO ONE IS SAFE.
I took the copies home to put together the packets on the living room floor while watching the Real Housewives of Atlanta.
And thank goodness for TpT because the only thing here not available on TpT is my newsletter. BUT . . . you can grab a FREE TEMPLATE. There are a couple of options . . . one is an example of my letter (fonts will look different if you don’t have the same fonts as me), a completely blank template, and one with the Reading Log/Birthdays labels. Click {HERE} to grab them. Remember to DOWNLOAD them so that you can edit them. 🙂
The printing practice sheets are from Teacher by the Beach, the Phonics passage and Ladybug poem are from A Teachable Teacher, the Garden passage is from Miss DeCarbo and the Write Spot is from me! Our math pages are from our math curriculum and no one wants to see that – ha!
By the way, how pretty is my stapler? 🙂
And that pretty much sums up my week, and a little bit of last week, too.
How was your week??
🙂

So happy to hear that you had a great spring break! Family time is amazing, and I loved Beauty and the Beast as well. 🙂 Hope your last 8 (!!!) weeks of school are wonderful.

Considering you haven’t broken up with numerous high school boyfriends, it might be helpful to phrase your “break up” with your hairdresser in this manner.
“So in so my situation has changed and therefore I’m not going to be able to come in for my usual haircut and color for awhile.” “My hair and I will both miss you”!
Don’t explain anything about your situation and then just don’t go back.

BRILLIANT!!!

I love the Little House books! I read all of them multiple time when I was growing up. Our third and fourth grade teachers read the original books out loud during the year and then take a field trip to the Ingalls farmstead in Desmet, South Dakota. If you ever travel to the Midwest you should visit there. In the summer time they put on a play from one of the books. It is outside and everyone sits on blankets and lawn chairs.

That is AWESOME!!!

I once broke up with my hairdresser, but still went back to my nail girl at his salon. It was awkward at first but he got over it and we remained friends!

Well that is great news!!

ha ha, laughed at your comment about shoving the math curriculum down their throats in the last eight weeks, me too! I was out for a week for surgery and had my sub do an easy math unit, time. my job share gave the test on Friday, her day to work. I just went in to collect my papers, um, they never got to one of the lessons. No wonder they completely missed it on the test! OH well, it is part of the math curriculum but not part of the CCSS so I am ok with it. AND, I spent my recovery AND two week spring break binge watching GILMORE GIRLS…completely hooked.
kristinoldham@yahoo.com says
Oh no!! Hahahaha!! And yay for Gilmore Girls!

Doesn’t it always seem that way…. just when you are ready for a really exciting day with your kids, that reminder of a dreaded planning/training “thingamajig” pops up on your calendar. It is great that you had a sub who carried out your plans so well, that doesn’t always happen. Sounds like you had a great time visiting home too. We do that as well, try to have a “just us” visit within my family. Cherished memories!
As the song “The Final Countdown” looms in my head (yes, I AM THAT OLD) and I see how much I have to get done before our school year is out, I send wishes for great, fulfilled days with your class before you tearfully send them on.
