Do you need another poem? Is this overkill? I can’t help it. I love this poem. It’s by Shel Silverstein. I especially love the part about everyone kissing. My class goes crazy. “Nooooooo!” they say. “Eeeeeew!” they screech. “Gross!!!” they shout. Meanwhile, we’ve had a kissing bandit and a little bit of early-onset-spring-fever resulting in boys chasing girls and vice versa on the playground. They’re not fooling me at all but I play right along. Kissing? Nooooo! Eeeeew! Gross! And then I watch the Bachelor and it’s completely confirmed. Nooooo! Eeeeew! Gross!
When we use gestures (and please do not refer to Courtney when I say gestures – this is Different. With a capital D.) to act out this poem, I “blow kisses” at that part and it’s 50/50 on whether or not my kids will mirror that gesture. They will kiss their brain, but heaven forbid blowing a germ filled kiss into our toxic and diseased classroom air (several of my kids have been absent for quite a long time. One little guy was out for a whole week. I pretended like I didn’t know who he was when he finally came back, but then he got a little sensitive and I had to change my tactic and dance around him like I had won the lottery. Or like I had found out that I get to sit in the limo and comfort the girls when they get sent home without a rose).

In other news, we took our Trimester 2 District Math Assessment today. Or, in other words, we took our 12 page-38 question-teacher scripted-test-that-made-me-long-for-a-time-machine-that-would-take-me-to-summer-vacation. Oh. Boy.
I did stop by the Pharmacy and pick up some Math Pills last night so that my kids would be able to take them pronto this morning. I do this every time we have to take a District Math Assessment and I feel that these pills really work to get their brains firing in whatever part of the brain takes care of mathematics. Every couple of pages, they have to take two more. The good thing is that these Math Pills are chewable. And safe. And FDA approved. They are even labeled with an M for Math so I know my principal would back me up on this (if I asked her). If you need some, this is what they look like:
Now I have left overs. And I may have to take a few of these without the kids seeing me. Because I told them that they are only used for these District Math Assessments. But the last time we had these pills around, I found myself taking them for any old reason. For example, if I was hot, I’d take one. Or if I was tired, I’d take five. And if it was after lunch and I just needed a fix, I’d take fifteen or so. But I’m an adult. I can do what I want. I just make sure the kids don’t see me when I do it.
Did you catch the Real Housewives of Orange County last night?? Woot Woot! So happy! π I missed those crazy ladies!

Love the poem and the math pills. I really dislike our district assessments. Ours are not so accurate, not so correctly aligned with the standards AND are kept secret until we have to give them. WHAT is the point of that? Then all of the bubbling in answers that is involved… takes hours and hours and hours.
On to brighter, lovelier things. I love your choice of poem. So cute! We sent home a choice of 3 poems for the kids to present this month and I'm not thrilled with any of them. I LOVE this one. Saving it for next year – maybe I can get the team to agree to switch. π Thanks for sharing.

Love the Math pills and love Shel, one of my fav. poems. True story, back in the fall early in the school year, I gave a little treat to my kids, one little girl asks for another "for her brother"…sorry sweetie, I only have enough for our class etc. A few minutes later she approaches my desk "Mrs. F. , I just saw you eat 3 kisses". Busted !!! They are always watching (for other's mistakes, never their own:)

Love all your poems! I went to a workshop on fluency by Ransinsk today and he talked about poems and how great they are for improving fluency. I thought of you and your poems and how glad I am that you share them! Thank you! Oh – and it's like the highlight of my week to read your Bachelor banter so HU–LARIOUS! It really is more entertaining than the show.

Thanks for the cute share. Too bad you can't share some of those math pills, that would really make my day.

This is a great poem. I like it, too. And I may have to get some of those math pills. I have more than a few kids who could use them.
Last year, some of the teachers bought the kids "Smart" water – that water that says 'smart' on the side. It was pretty funny. I don't think it worked though.

Love the math pills as well – I use brain pills – sour chewies because sour stimulates the brain centers, but who can resist M for math?

Love the poem! I giggled like crazy about the Math pills – but I'm running right out to buy me some – I have a whole class that could use them – except then, we'll have playground problems. Any pills for Perfect Playground Performance? I'd give them a Parsnip but I'm not too sure what that is…:) Lisa

I love that poem! In my Children's Lit class in college, we had to make a poetry anthology of any 40 poems that spoke to us somehow… I included Hug O' War because it cracks me up.
Your math pills are so funny!!! I am totally doing that next time I do our reading program assessment. My kids don't get stressed about it but it's SO LONG that they definitely stop caring after like question 2……….
