Hey there, peeps!
I’m tired.
For no good reason. Other than the fact that I had some very strange dreams last night. One was about going on a field trip with an upper grade teacher at my school. Who happens to be male. And loud. And tall. While we were on this field trip, the kids kept jumping into the pool and we kept trying to stop them. But it wasn’t working. I was also mixing up all of my medication and the kids kept interfering with me trying to figure it all out.
Anyone out there interpret dreams? I don’t get the pool. I don’t actually have your typical variety of what you call a pool. Mine is generally filled with bubbles and I read whilst in it. No rafts allowed. And I’m really the only one allowed in it. Seeing as how there is no lifeguard on duty. It’s a safety issue.
I don’t get the pool in my dream. Obviously.
When I am not teaching Language Arts or tying shoes or running in the opposite direction of a snotty nose, I teach Math. I bet you didn’t know that. I think I’ve talked about it . . . once or so.
We are currently learning how to tell time. Our standards state that first graders need to be able to tell time by the hour and the half hour. That’s all. I wonder what the Common Core standards state . . . did you know the Common Core standards have not even been mentioned at my school? Nope.
So our enVision math curriculum goes into a lot of depth about telling time. It’s FIVE WHOLE LESSONS. Two of them are about telling time to the hour. One is about telling time to the half hour. Pretty sure that’s overkill, but whatever. I did it. (The other two cover how long things take — minute, hour, day, AND reading a schedule) My kids were getting really tired of ALL THE LESSONS in this topic, but I gave them more. Call me an overachiever. I know.
We played a matching game a few times today for review. I passed out the cards and the kids had to find their partners. Can you believe that someone tried to switch cards so that they could be with their BFF? The nerve.

I lied. We only played the game twice. My kids got a little out of control. I had to be a DREAM SQUASHER.
I squashed their dreams of playing for the third time and made them do a worksheet. I told you, I’m tired.

That’s all. I had a meeting with the principal and the Leadership team during PTT today. Today was supposed to be PTT with my team, but we had a big brouhaha brewhaha discussion regarding things AT SCHOOL that I shouldn’t talk about on here. Gosh darn it. I really want to. Bad. Really bad. But I won’t. Waaa. (I didn’t get in trouble and it has nothing to do with my blog. It’s just stupid school stuff. Ooops. I did not have that worded very well. Sorry for any confusion. My blog is still a secret. So everybody — mums the word!!!! And shhhhhh!!! :))
Basketball Wives has been on in the background while I’ve been typing this. YIKES!!!!! My ears hurt.

We have Envisions too! L.A.M.E. I agree with the whole 5 lessons thing-really? Only one lesson on time to the half hour. But then a whole bunch of other lessons in the book are RIDICULOUSLY over my kiddos heads. Makes no sense! Thanks for the freebie! It looks PERFECT!

I like that your post title can be interpreted two ways.
1. Killing time, such as, "I have nothing to do so I'm just killing time."
2. Killing Time, such as, "I brought my axe cause it's Killing Time!"
And yes, number two is the one I heard in my head first! What's that about?!
PS I'm in Texas, too, and we don't talk about Common Core either. It's all about the TEKS, baby. (And now, the STAAR boooohoooo)

Hey Kristen! I get your tiredness. . . except that mine is due to going to bed at midnight and getting up at 6:00. . . I think I need to stop that!
I have a tip for your students that might help them understand the hands of the clock better.
Tell them that the word HOUR is a short word with 4 letters, so that's the short hand.
The word MINUTE is a longer word with 6 letters, so it's the longer hand.

Were the kids drowning in that pool, or just having fun? I know absolutely NOTHING about dreams, but I'm gonna add my opinion anyway… cuz you know that's how I roll.
My interpretation:
Drowning kids = kids splashing around in the mess curriculum police and 30:1 has created…so tough to reach/help/teach/be effective with…
Kids just splashin' around not following rules = kids just not listening, cuz there are 30 of em and that is just too dang many and they are too busy chatting and the pool of 30 kids is obviously far enough out of your reach to rein them back in, therefore creating an overall air of … OMGness!
Either way…. sounds like a lot of chaos and stress to me. I don't think you should have those dreams anymore. 😀 {haha}

I don't use enVision, but Everyday Math and I feel the same way, one of the lessons I was supposed to teach this week was skip counting by 5's (seriously, we've been practicing this since the beginning of the year!) We don't do Common Core up here, but our new standards seem pretty close to the CC (although our kinder standards don't change much).

At least you have interesting dreams – when I dream about school, it's usually about taking roll or naughty children. I spend 10 days in the ICU in the hospital once – and my husband would try to comfort me when I would get upset. He'd ask, "What are you doing right now?" Time is the bain (sp?) of my existence…probably because our curriculum decided that first graders need to know the language "quarter to" and "quarter after." Oh, and be able to tell time to the quarter hour…even though our standards only say to the hour and half hour. Ugh.

I am totally keeping your blog a secret. It's way too entertaining a read to be compromised by the Curriculum Cops finding out. YIKES! Okay, so even though California hasn't officially adopted Common Core, my district is like one of those students sitting in the front row with their hand in the air gasping oo, oo, oo, pick me, pick me! As far as telling time, Common Core for first grade is "Tell and write time in hours and half-hours, using analog and digital clocks." California added (did you know that states can add their own in ADDITION to the Common Core?!!) "Relate time to events (e.g. before/after, shorter/longer). If I had a blog, I'd start whining about the standards for money though (as a Second Grade teacher). Kindergarten and First Grade don't have any. Yes, you read that right – they don't have ANY MONEY STANDARDS IN KINDERGARTEN OR FIRST GRADE! Then Second Grade is "Solve word problems involving COMBINATIONS of dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and cents symbol appropriately." Seriously? SERIOUSLY?!!!!!! Even though there have been no grades yet responsible for coin identification and value? Oh my Word! THAT will be exciting!
I can't believe you haven't discussed the common core standards. We are being made to use them k-6 next year as well as our current state standards. Not sure how we will fit it all in!

My school hasn't really said too much about the common core standards either. My principal said it's because our standards won't be changing much and that we don't have money to buy new adoptions anyways……I have compared the two to check…who has the time?

Last night I dreamt (or has "dreamed" become the correct alternative?) that I went to Magic Mountain and the little car on the roller coaster just kept going and going out farther and farther into the desert.
If I had been more conscious, I would have looked for a pool. You KNOW I would have waved to you.
Maybe I feel adrift and alone, trying to make progress with kids who are more interested in… ummm… anything other than learning.
Maybe YOU feel like the kids are drowning in curriculum restrictions. Or assessments. Or maybe they were trying to have fun and you were trying to stop them. Because the CC said no to art. AND fun.
Or, maybe you secretly wish that your kids had access to a swimming program. (I'm fairly certain that you are NOT secretly wishing to teach swimming.)
Or… Maybe there was water running somewhere while you were asleep and you just dreamed/dreamt it into the story line.
Or maybe you were just thirsty.
OR! Maybe you were thinking of when the Ben jumped out of the airplane with Lindzi and you thought (while sleeping) there has to be more fun than this… or than this guy… or….

Common Core Standard 1.MD – First graders should be able to tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks. Can you tell what the focus is on in grad school?
I love the game and will be printing it out soon. Teacher Tipster has a great "I spy" game that he uses with his first graders for time. =)

In our district we keep hearing about the Common Core Standards. Lucky me, I'm on a committee that gets to "analyze" some of these crazy standards. There will be no money until second grade, seriously???? I feel bad for these little ones that already struggle trying to meet the California Standards. It's coming to my district next year. K and 1 are giving it a go. Yikes!!!!! My poor little firsties.
