Last week, we started digging into Nonfiction Text Features.
This is not to say that I have never pointed out these features before. Because I have. I mean, Junie B. Jones has a Table of Contents in every single book. 😉 I know, I know — Junie B. is fiction! However, you can read more about my love for Junie B. {HERE}.
Anywho . . .
I downloaded these great Nonfiction Text Features from Primary Punch! And they were FREE!
The freebie comes with 20 posters. I shared all 20 posters with my class, but we mainly focused on Table of Contents, Glossary, Index, and Captions.
I passed out post-its to my kids and showed them how to make several post-its out of one! Magic, I tell you!! WE CUT THEM UP INTO STRIPS!
Voila!
Look at all of my post-its!
Look at mine!
I have a million!
Mrs. Oldham is a genius!
Alright. No one said that last one. But I’m sure they were thinking it.
Then, because even though I had planned to go to the library and get a plethora of nonfiction books for us to explore, I didn’t, I had a staff meeting instead, we just used the Science and Social Studies textbooks from our desks.
Mrs. Oldham IS a genius!
😉
So off the kids went with instructions to tag any pages that had a Table of Contents, captions, a glossary, or an index.
It was loud and noisy and kids were yelling out:
I found an index!!!!
Where?!!
Show me!!
Look!!
This one has a PICTURE glossary!
NO WAY!
Fun was had by all, let me tell you!
This week, we are going to do it again with nonfiction books from the library. And the books will be smaller. And not as long.
And then we will figure out how a glossary works.
And why an index is important.
Even though I know I’ve talked about this before (I distinctly remember mentioning it during our unit on mammals, but whatever).
😉

You have got to try “text mapping”. Your students will love it.

Fun Kristin – I bet they loved it. We had a hands on day too during math measuring all sorts of things with partners from a baggie I pre made. AND ~ ~~ I was so mad…the district police came through like 15 minutes AFTER we finished..and cleaned up…seriously!?! I walked up to them and told them they missed an amazing hands on lesson and one of them laughed and I said, I’m serious. :o( #bummer
