So today was the last day.
It does not feel real. But either way, this is true:
We have a lot of changes going on at our school. I do not like change. I’m resistant to it.
Case in point:
I’ve been driving the same car for the last ten and a half years.
I’ve been living in the same house for the last fourteen years.
I just completed my 16th year teaching first grade.
I will be married to the same man for 16 years in August.
I drive the same way to work every.single.day. Well, unless I stop for a coffee. Or if I have to take Murphie to daycare. Or if I have to run an errand and since our Walmart is open 24 hours and desperate times call for desperate measures, I will stop there. Other than that, I drive the same way to work every.single.day.
I get up on the left side of the bed every.single.morning. This is because otherwise I’d have to crawl over hubby and I’m usually too tired to climb that mountain.
So there you go. I don’t like change.
But we have two teachers retiring, two teachers moving (one to another school to work part time and the other to the district) AND our principal of TEN YEARS is leaving.
This affects me greatly. I have to prove myself to the new guy. Or girl. Who knows? We certainly don’t. It’s a mystery.
There are rumors. Good ones and scary ones.
My thought is I have to prove myself to this new person. And they have to get to know me and how rigid and inflexible and hyper and talkative I am.
BIG SHOULDER SIGH.
So changes. Lots of them.
At least I’m staying in first grade again. I mean, sixteen years is just not enough, obviously.
Now I’m packing for a fun little mini vacay to San Luis Obispo. The hubby’s great uncle is turning 80 and we are having a party. We will also be wine tasting and celebrating MY hubby’s birthday, too.
When we return from our mini vacay, we are going on a longer vacation to The River. Some people think of the people who go to The River as River Rats. However, I’m more of a Glamping Girl and we will be staying in a hotel. So I don’t think I count. Either way, I will be floating and relaxing. (If you’re worried about Murphie, that makes two of us. I don’t think she’s quite gotten the hang of the can opener so I’m not really sure if she’ll be eating well while we’re gone.)
While I’m out and about, I’ll be having a couple of re-runs on this here blog so you don’t forget about me. So check in! Maybe a giveaway or a freebie might show up!
Also, I don’t know if I’ll be able to watch The Bachelorette on Monday while I’m on my raft!! I will have to catch up when I return so I may have to {GASP!} skip this week’s Talk About It Tuesday.
I know. I know!!!
And if you’re truly really freaking out about Murphie’s meals, please don’t. She knows how to help herself to the treats, no problem.
Okay, okay!
She will be staying OVERNIGHT with her daycare. I may cry when we drop her off because I have a sneaking suspicion that she is going to wag her tail and run off into the sunset with the other dogs and forget all about me.
Waaaaa.
I think the wine and floating and relaxing will help, though.
Are you out for summer? What are your summer plans? If you’re not out yet, how many more days????
Trish says
Frownie face…I have to go to school until…gasp…June 27th!! I just hope i can make it! The Brain fairy has visited my classroom and sucked out most of my kiddos brains, so we are really having a tough time following directions and suddenly we seem to have forgotten every rule we ever learned. I feel like crabby teacher! I love your "Glamping" Thanks for that! Now I have the right word to explain to my hubby, what camping should be for a princess like me!

June 28th…..yup, hard to believe. Daydreaming about our trip to DC and Ocean City. Enjoy your vacays ๐

Oh, the peace and serenity of the river. I live about 2-3 miles from ours. We have 5 canoes. How many times did I float (paddle) (struggle) on the river last summer? Dare I say ZERO??!!!???
How is that you ask? Well, my husband works night shift, cuts hay, tends to cows, and I go to conferences, work part-time in the summer, etc. YEP! True workaholics! Oh, and not to mention that even if I wanted to put the canoe in the river for some quality ME time, I can't LIFT it by myself. Solution? I'm gonna buy a lightweight kayak that I can carry around like Atlas carried the world. ๐
So, have fun on your river trip and think of little ole me.

I think change is my middle name! I've lived in more places than I can add up right now. I taught 8 years in Japan and finally made the move to Europe. I've been teaching for 2 years in a school I love with a principal I love, only to be excessed. Thank goodness my next school is not too far, so I don't have to move houses. Also, it's the same grade, so I am thankful! Have a great summer!!

Your upcoming school year sounds a lot like my own. We are also getting a new principal and the unknown can be so scary! Today is my first off also. Enjoy your trips!!

I completely understand how you feel. We had 2 new administrator this past year. Now this year, he has changed our teams completely. One of my great friends has went to second grade. Another team member was sent to a different school. We still don't even know who all will be on our teams over the next year!! ๐ I will be praying for you lol.

I have been out for a week and have no plans other than DIYing my house. I'm jealous of your vacay plans. We are also getting a new principal this year, and the rumors around our new one are also scary. This is my tenure year, so I REALLY feel like I have something to prove to the new person in charge…I feel your pain, Kristin. Have some drinks for both of us on that raft:)

We have a lot of changes going on at my school too. We are all switching classrooms and our school is switching to gender differentiated classrooms! I will either have a class of all boys or all girls next year. I am nervous but excited.
Have a great summer!

Omg, I never even heard of gender differentiated classrooms! I can't even imagine! I'm so curious how that turns out and why they went with that decision. All our talk for next year is almost a random mish mosh ok kids in every class!

We have one more week with kids and then a Saturday workday. (No teacher unions in Texas, can you tell?)
There are many changes for next year at my school as well. Lots of fruit basket turn over with grade level changes for teachers. The admin. thought is that teachers that have formerly taught in the upper primary grades will show the "rigor" that is needed to do well on tests in future years.I think it will show upper primary teachers ALLLLLL that lower primary grade teachers have to teach. (Insert evil snicker here).
Have a great summer!
BTW- I'm now hooked on The Bachelorette thanks to you! Like I needed another reality show to get addicted to. ๐

I can empathize! Our principal left last year after 8 years in our building. I hope that it all turns out well for you! Have a great summer! 3.5 days to go:)

Ten more days, which equals about fifty thousand hours and at least 1.2 million "Sit down" "Let's work quietly, please" and "Stop chewing on your erasers" left to go. This summer? Can't think about that yet — gotta survive the next ten school days!!
Love your blog — I will miss you this summer! Have fun!

10 more loooooong days! I think the kids have come to school with earplugs because they can't hear me anymore and they definitely can't hear themselves…ugh! So looking forward to my week in Vegas/ Victorville in July.
Enjoy your summer vacation!

I understand how you feel!! In my district the principal, school nurse and reading specialist are all retiring! They are the pillars of the school. Change is scary but everything will work out!
Congratulations on being done!

My last day was today . . . kiddos last day was yesterday. We have lots of changes this next year . . .including a new principal who's never dealt with students younger than high school before. EVER. and we had our 'former' one trained so well . . . lol. Staff changes as well . . . and I am moving up to 2nd grade. Excited and scared, all at once. Enjoy the river . . .

I still have 12 days with my firsties. It's the best group I have ever had in my 15 years of teaching and I don't think I will ever have another group like them. Don't worry about your new principal. I hate change too but our new principal turned out to be the best one we have ever had! It changed the whole climate of the school. Best wishes to you and have a wonderful summer.
