Man! I must say I feel a little fancy having all these posts for you to click on. I feel like a REAL blogger, and not just someone getting on here talking to hear myself talk.
Center 5: Just Fold! Mini Books
We love these Just Fold! Mini Books. I will admit that I am the one who folded these. Although, from now on, I will have an upper grade student helper do it for me and, by December, my kids will be able to fold these books by themselves. Or most of them, anyway. I mean, I’m not gonna lie. I’ll probably have one or two that fold them upside down and backwards . . . but I just call that thinking outside the box and gifted and talented material.
We did one of these books whole class . . . they are differentiated, but I copied the “fill in the sight word” version. So I modeled how to do that (the sight word is underlined on the title so there is no confusion) and then we colored neatly. And then we read our books!
Kids LOVE making books. Who knew?
Just kidding. I did. Obviously.
Now we are all experts at this and can do it independently during centers!
Center 6: Write the Room by Teaching with Love and Laughter
This one is POPULAR! This set is perfect for the beginning of the year in first grade — all kids are successful and totally capable.
Write the Room will always be a center – but as the year goes on, the activities will change and become more difficult (sentences, math, mystery, etc). Kids LOVE LOVE LOVE walking around the room and Write the Room gives them a purpose to do so.
This pack has sets of ten cards and matching recording sheets for a bunch of different topics. I hung up 20 cards around the room and copied the recording sheets back to back so that my higher kids had more of a challenge. It worked great!
When we did this whole class, I just had my kids use a textbook for something hard to write on . . . but now that we’re in groups during centers, I have clipboards and fun pencils for them.
