A Teeny Tiny Teacher

Giveaway #2

Only two more days until Open House.  Three if you count the actual day of Open House which is Thursday.  And then I will only have to worry about report cards, red portfolio folders, our first grade play, math assessments (after report cards are due because that makes complete and total sense, of course), my slideshow, and tearing down my room.  It’s all good.  Eleven and a half days is plenty of time to accomplish all that.

I was super surprised and excited by the great turn out for the first Learning Resources Giveaway that I did.  Loved it.  I was so happy that I had something really good to give away.   The best news is that I have another product to give away!!

It’s the HearAll Assessment Recorder.  And it’s genius.  It’s like having eyes in the back of your head except instead of seeing what’s going on at other tables and center groups, you get to hear what’s going on at other tables and center groups.  
(Don’t think I haven’t thought about planting this in the Teacher’s Lounge when I have to leave to use the restroom.  Or using it at Happy Hour for the same reason.  I wouldn’t have to miss a thing!)
You can read more about this product right {HERE} but let me tell you how I’ve been utilizing it in my classroom.
Well . . . my favorite use for it is Plays.  We had been using the Easi-Speak USB Recorder, aka, the coolest microphone around, but we had to share it.  I only have one so far.  Emphasis on SO FAR.
So I tried the HearAll Assessment Recorder.  It’s perfect for small groups!  It actually has four built in microphones on the corners.  This way, the students have their hands free and can practice their fluency and expression while rehearsing their plays.  GENIUS, I repeat.  
Then, when they play it back, that one little student who thinks he was born to play the role of Carrot Number One and should be nominated for an Oscar, can actually hear himself sound like a robot.  Really.  That’s what he said today.  He said, “I don’t sound like a carrot.  I sound like a robot.  Let’s start over.”  (Meanwhile, his group groaned and complained, and someone may have called him the “s” word and he may have retorted, but I was concentrating on the self-assessment piece and how he wanted to try again.)
(Carrots are supposed to sound crunchy, in case you didn’t know.)
I have also alternated the HearAll between table groups.  I’m currently doing Running Records for our District assessments so I’ve had to give lots of busy work  meaningful-review-enrichment-engaging activities.  My kids have been instructed not to interrupt me at the back table.  Like many of you, I wear a crown, glasses, feather boa, sash, sparkly jewels, mustache, etc. when I am assessing, which means my first graders better not interrupt me.  Ever.  At all.  For any reason.  Go away.  Leave me alone.  If you do, I hope you are dying, dead, or have lost a finger, so help me nubs!   
Anyways, after each assessment, I just move the HearAll Assessment Recorder to a new table group.
It is like I am sitting on top of the table with them.  Criss Cross and all that.  Arms folded.  Mouth in a firm line.  Well, sort of a firm line.  As best as I can manage.  
Most of the time, I can’t hear a thing on the recorder because they are so nervous I am going to hear something that they actually just work.  Work.  FOR FREE.  
I’ve also used this at other centers.
It’s excellent for my Fishing Center.  I hear them reading their sight words, rather than a big ole game of let’s catch a fish and pretend to eat it.  Or let’s catch a fish and see it die when it’s out of water.  Or let’s catch a fish and pretend to eat it so that everyone gags.
It’s also excellent for my Sight Word Game Boards.  Again, I hear them reading their sight words.  For real.  They don’t just roll the dice and move their marker.  They actually read the sight words because they know I’m going to listen to the recorder later.  
Rub hands together.
Raise eyebrows.
Evil laugh.  
As you can see, it can be used for lots of things!  Math facts, fluency, small group reading, literature circles, etc.
Again, I want more than one.  I think my presence is necessary at each table group.  And one for the teacher’s lounge is not out of the question.

Joshua Ledet is from my home state and he ROCKS! I watch Bones and Criminal Minds and might just die this summer waiting on next season to start.
