Who could use another reading teacher in their classroom? I know I could! What if I told you I could guide your students through engaging activities that involve blending and reading CVC words while you work with other groups? It’s true! Download this FREE -at family activity and try it in your room today!
I AM SO SO SO EXCITED to begin the year with these!
Each QR Code Activity is 15-16 minutes long! I KNOW!! That means you can pull a small group and I will pull a small group!! RIGHT? I mean, it’s ME on the recording for 15-16 minutes! And I’m teaching!! I’m doing GUIDED INSTRUCTION with YOUR kids!!
And you can trust me because I’ve been at this for 20 years. HOLY COW.
I created 15 different activities!
During each activity, I’m working with students on phonemic awareness, CVC words, word families, word chunks, blending, rhyming, writing, and FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS. 🙂 The kids have to color objects a certain color, find objects based on the word I sound out, etc. Then we practice writing the words at the bottom of the page. The first three words are words we practiced during the mini-lesson and the fourth one is a word we didn’t practice, but that students should be able to write because it belongs in a certain word family. This is for an enrichment and extension of the activity.
As always, I act ridiculous and sing songs and try to make the kids laugh during the activity so that it’s FUN!
Like I said, if you head to my store, you can grab the -at word family FOR FREE in the preview to see how this all works!
🙂
Other word families included are:
-ag, -et, -ed, -it, -ig, -ot, -op, -ug, -un
And then the last five activities are a mixed practice review!
Don’t worry if you think you’re “not good” with technology or think you don’t have adequate technology in your classroom to use these QR Code Activities.
All you really need is ONE smartphone. Which means you could even use YOUR OWN PERSONAL phone for this activity! Then get this awesome little doohickey on Amazon for under $9 and several kids can listen at once with only one smartphone.

You can also ask parents to donate old smartphones.
I got four just from putting out a plea on my personal Facebook page! You just have to sound sad. And hint a little. Like this: “Believe it or not, I still have a tape cassette listening center. It’s true. I know. I’m really trying to update it with some old smartphones if you have any lying around . . . ”
It doesn’t have to be a smartphone. You can use iPads, too! And Chromebooks work as well — you just need a QR Code Reader installed as an app. Then use the Chromebook camera to scan the code.
And, because it’s a QR code, you will need access to Wi/Fi. 🙂
Anyways, it’s so so so fun and so so so cool!! My new kiddos are loving these so far!!
Do I sound excited?
BECAUSE I AM!!!
But I’ve kind of worn myself out so I think it’s time for a little nap . . .
I just got the free preview of the -at family, and I am in love! I am sooo purchasing this! Well I am waiting to see how your Facebook contest goes to see if I get lucky…but it’s already on my wishlist! The kiddos will love this!
Thank you for creating something that has been on my to-do list for a few years. I love using QR codes in my first grade classroom and I am determined to put all ( or at least some) of my QR code learning ideas onto paper so my firsties can use them this year! Thanks for the freebie preview of the -at family. I will enjoy using it in my classroom soon and plan to purchase the entire packet. My firsties will love this. Have my fingers crossed to see if I will be a lucky winner but feel like a winner anyway because your great product (and hard work) will make my reading group time so much easier.
Oh my gosh Kristin, you are just so amazing and so talented! I didn’t think I could love anything more than your Reader’s Theater’s and now THIS?!! Are you kidding me? This is amazingness!! Do you think you will continue making these in increasing difficulty and then maybe bundle them? I’m in love with this…. Thanks for being you and being so awesome!
Love, love, love!!!! What a great idea. Can’t wait to check this out.
“Not to toot my own horn, but TOOT TOOT” – this made me burst out laughing ?? well played!
When o tried to get the ap activity it is not free but is for sale for $7
Hi Grace! You need to download the preview (it is a large green button under the picture of the product in my store) in order to get the free -at family activity. Once you download the preview, you will be able to get the -at family activity. Thank you!
Oh-EM-GEEEE! Listen. I have bought a lot of tpt products…and when I say a lot….I mean way more than my husband needs to know about. This is BY FAR one of the most amazing products I have ever purchased!!!! My kiddos loved it. We did one together last Thursday-then they did one by themselves during centers on Friday. Wholly engagement! They were so engaged and LISTENING! Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your talents. I hope you will continue to make these for the rest of the phonics skills we teach in 1st. I will surely buy them ALL!!!!!
Awww! This is SO nice of you to say! THANK YOU!!!!! I’m so glad you and your kids loved it! YAY!!!! I am planning on making more, for sure! I’m currently working on a blends pack because that’s coming up after short vowels. 🙂
Wholly-should be HOLY. I’m clearly a little excited about this product!!!
Haha! 🙂
Do you have to use your phone or could you use this on an iPad?
You can absolutely use this on an iPad! 🙂
When I try and download the free preview it takes me to teacher pay teacher and the price is $9.00 for the set. Do you still have one I can listen to?
Hi there! Yes, the link will take you to my store on Teachers Pay Teachers. Under the product picture, there is a green button that says “Preview”. Click that and then click “download” to get the -at activity for free. Thank you!
Can I use the android mini tablet…..
I do have access to wifi.
Hi! I’m pretty sure you can as long as you can download a QR Scan Reader and the tablet has a camera. 🙂
Are there only two to purchase? I could only find cvc and blends.
Hi! Yes, that’s all I have so far! 🙂 I’m working on more. If you follow my store, you’ll receive an email when I add a new one. Thanks so much for your interest!
Is there a QR scanner you recommend? I have tried multiple and in each of them there are ads at the bottom of the window. I can’t really tell if they are associated with the QR scanner or audioboom. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I love the activities and can not wait for my kiddos to use them!
I think the ads are because of Audio Boom. I am trying to find another site to use, but it’s difficult because the recordings are over ten minutes. You can use the MP3 files and then students won’t even need to use the QR code. You can download the MP3 file directly onto your devices. I hope this helps! 🙂
Is the -at family preview still available? It takes me to the link for a bundle.
Hi there! Yes. You just need to download it in the preview which is the green button under the picture of the product. Let me know if you have any trouble! 🙂
