Picture Dictionary

Apparently, we had Monday off for Labor Day and this has been a short week. But I’m here to say: COULD’VE FOOLED ME.

It has been HOT HOT HOT. Which means we have not been getting our recesses.

So, if you’re doing the math, THIS HAS BEEN THE LONGEST WEEK EVER. I said, EVER.

And, even though I was out today for a training, IT HAS STILL BEEN THE LONGEST WEEK EVER.

Anywho . . . I feel at this point that I should remind you how much I love teaching and how much I love my class. 😉

I love teaching.

I love my class.

Rainbows and puppy dog tails. Lah-di-dah. Skip to my Lou.

Within this short week, I was able to revise my Picture Dictionary and get it into the hands of a small group so that was exciting! Partly because it was early in the school day when we are at our best and/or still sleepy (read: everyone is calm and quiet) and partly due to THIS! IS! NEW!

These are working out really well for my beginning readers and my language learners. Eventually, we’ll all have one but, for right now, I’m just focusing in on a few select kids.

We already started adding words, too! I still make encourage my kids to practice sounding out their words – obviously – but they were super excited to write their own words. And they totally got it, as far as words that begin with m are written on the Mm page, and words that begin with f are written on the Ff page. Which, if you ask me, is very rigorous.

I mean, it’s a beginning dictionary skill.

Even though we have computers now.

But still.

It’s the alphabet.

And ABC order.

And a tool for writing.

And a whole lot of other skills if I put my mind to it but, like I said, it’s been a long week so that’s all I can come up with at the moment. How about you think of one and leave it in the comments? Let’s collaborate, shall we?

I also made a version of this in color, too, just in case you’re rich and you want to make some dictionaries for your writing center or each table group or something.

This also works if you have HP Instant Ink. Which makes me feel reckless and carefree and not at all like the Type A person that I am.

And this is all I know for today.

It is too hot and I can’t think and it’s time for ice cream.

Or dinner.

Whichever comes first unless I have ice cream for dinner which is not wrong and actually very smart thinking on my part, and that, my friends, is called rigor.

1. Love these dictionaries. I love that there is only one page per letter and not a zillion pages to sift through. I have them copied and ready to go for my small group next week!

Hooray for rigor! I just can't buy a color printer for my house. I'd get very, very carried away. My husband just got me a laminator and so far I'm managing to use self-control!
