Pin It – Sight Word Edition (and a freebie)

Hello and happy Sunday!  It’s a super happy Sunday when you know you have the next day off.  No sign of the Sunday Night Blues here.  Nope.

Not to mention, CUTE BOY THAT RESCUED Murphie came over yesterday.

Yes, that’s right.  He came back.  The hubby met him and thinks he’s about 18.  Either way, he is definitely crushing on me because he came back.

And I don’t think it matters in the least that it was only 6pm and I was still already in my pjs, wearing a school Spirit sweatshirt, wearing no makeup, and sporting unwashed a messy up-do hairstyle.

Anywho, he had his German Shepherd with him (Bo or Beau or Bow) and wanted to know if he could walk Murphie.

Do you think he thinks Murphie is neglected since she got out last weekend?

Or do you think he was just looking for any old excuse to come see the older woman, aka ME, who he was hoping had no husband and was lonely?

Or is that a Lifetime movie?

The hubby made it perfectly clear that I was married.  And then he picked up Murphie and held her like a baby.  I’m not quite sure why the second part happened, but I think it had to do with the polite question of how much did Murphie weigh and/or my husband was showing off his manhood.  Either one.

And for those of you who might not know me that well, I am HAPPILY married.

It’s not my fault some cute boy is stalking me.

Besides all that, I finished up my Pin It! Sight Word Edition pack! 

My kids LOVE LOVE LOVE it.  They can’t get enough of it and even choose to do it for Fun Friday.
Here’s how it all works:
Pick a list that you want your students to practice.  For example, List 9.  Or you could print different lists to differentiate for your students’ needs.  Which would make you look really good, by the way.

Staple the list to the top of any color of construction paper you want.
Students will pin each “dot” that makes up each letter for each sight word.  This works best on the carpet so that the push pin pushes through the paper.  I like to use the jumbo push pins from Staples, but the little ones work fine, too.  My kids just lie down on the carpet and get to work.
Students will pin each sight word, the sentence, the border, and even their name!
I use the Pin It! pack in centers . . . but you could use it for early finishers, word work, Fun Friday, or a whole class activity.   
I always have my kids read their list of words to me when they are finished.  You could also have them read their list to each other, a parent helper, or a big buddy.
Obviously, you have to be super careful because the kids are holding and using push pins which, I suppose, could be considered weapons.
DUN DUN DUN.
However, I’ve never had an issue in all my years of teaching and I am old and withered so that is a pretty good track record.  I make my kids hold up their right hand and repeat after me, “I will take care of my pin.  I will stay in one spot.  I will only pin paper.  I will not hurt my neighbor.  I will not try to pin my freckle.  I will not try to pin my teacher’s many moles.  I will not use my pin to pick my nose.  I will always return my pin.  Amen.”
Or something like that.  You get the gist.
And then I post our Pin It Rules by our Pin It Center.
There are 30 Sight Word Lists which happen to coincide with my Sight Words Fluency pack.  But you don’t need that pack to work with this pack.  I’m just letting you know where I got the lists from.  Contrary to popular belief, I didn’t just pull them out of my hat.  
Hat, I said.
The sight words are a combo of Dolch/Fry/and what my district requires our students to know.
But let me tell you the very best part about this pack.

No joke.  There is something about pinning that makes students work quietly.  For real.  
I was hoping there was a Common Core State Standard for students working quietly, but I couldn’t find it.
But this would totally exceed that standard if it existed.  I mean, it would blow it out of the water.

    I definitely wouldn't trust my current class with pins! They are a rare breed! However, I am definitely saving it for the future. I'd love the peace and quiet for 5 minutes that would come along with it! Enjoy Catching Fire! Love that book!

    I agree that pinning makes kids concentrate and therefore be very quiet. I usually do clip art and hang in the window of our class for different holidays. Even in kindergarten kids love to pin pictures. I know they would love to do the words too! Amber.grenz@k12.sd.us
