Summer Review for Kinder Kids

In the meantime, I’ve been hard at work on a little summer review pack for some of my kids who are struggling.  And, once I got going, I realized it was  felt  looked  would work as a Summer Review for Kinder Kids.  But I’m not telling my first graders that.  They don’t need to know or see the cover.  So nobody tell them, thankyouverymuch.  The important part is that they’re going to feel successful, and that they’re academic needs are being met exactly where they are.  

Doesn’t that sound like I am good at what I do?  Meeting students’ needs.  Check.

Nod head.  

Yep.

One of my little guys is a whiz in math.  Seriously.  I call him The Math Wizard.  He loves that.  Plus, he has the cutest dimples you’ve ever seen and I just want to poke my fingers in them and say “goochie goochie goo” but I don’t.  I learned that the hard way my first year of teaching.  Live and learn is what I always say.  Anywho, he smiles from HERE to HERE when I call him The Math Wizard of This and That and Beyond.

However, he is really struggling in Language Arts.  

It’s painful.

For me, not him.  He has no idea.  Maybe that’s the problem?

So I will be sending home this little packet with him:

I have another little friend in my class who is a great reader, but struggles in Math.
And her confidence in Math is . . . well, it’s practically non-existent.  So I made some math pages for her and hopefully she will feel successful and be able to rise to the occasion of Yes It Is Summer Vacation But A Little Homework Never Hurt Anyone And If You Bring It Back To School When You Are In Second Grade, Mrs. Oldham Will Give You One Whole Starburst And/Or A Hug – It’s Your Choice.  

Welllllll, I wish I could say that’s it.  We’re all good and we’re all ready for next year and everything is going to be puppy dogs and rainbows and flowers and swimming and video games and sitting on the couch all summer, but I can’t.
Because I have a couple of kiddos who need it all.
BIG SIGH.
They have made a TON of growth, but they’re still behind.  
So while concentrating on their successes and how hard they have worked, I am also going to be sending the entire pack with them so that they don’t forget everything they have learned.  Otherwise, I will cry my head off.
And then I will bury it in the sand.
And then I may not return in the new school year.
Well, that last one isn’t true, otherwise how would those kids return their packs to me for one whole starburst and/or a hug?
So basically, there’s a little something for everyone because if your class is anything like mine, you are basically teaching every grade level ever in all the land except that you’re not officially a multi-grade combo and this is just your life.
Even though it says Summer Review,  I’ll also be using it at the beginning of first grade as a Pre-Assessment.  It would be great to see what the kids can do right away . . . when they’re not crying or asking when is it time to go home . . .

    These look as great as your morning work which I have and love! My special ed kids could certainly use either pack. I am getting ready to make their summer work packets since they will be in extended school year this summer.

    This is a TOUGH decision! They are both FANTASTIC! It seems that the greatest deficient is in Language Arts over the summer – but we have a LOT of reading programs. So I pick MATH. There aren't that many resources out there for the kiddos. Thanks for creating! jennifersteadmanbrown@gmail.com

    I love both! I hope you keep them on sale so that in case I don't win I can buy them on sale. If I had to choose then I'd choose the L.A. one. I used your Kindergarten morning work for half the year and always hid my binder with the title so the kids didn't know they were doing K work. We finally moved on to your grade one sheets.

    I would love to win the Language Arts packet. I love the language arts packet because I am always trying to incorporate new things into my lessons. I love the math because it reviews a lot of skills that they have already learned.
