I’m THIS.CLOSE to summer vacation! We get out Wednesday and BONUS: it’s a half day. 👊🏼 It doesn’t even feel real!
I can’t wait to spend time lounging around in my pajamas, watching Netflix, meeting friends for lunch, using the bathroom whenever I want, and reading.
As most of you already know, I am an avid reader. I don’t want to finish a book without knowing I have another one ready to go. I read almost 100% fiction throughout the school year because that’s all my brain can handle. Adding any kind of “professional” reading to my already full school brain is overwhelming for me. It feels way too much like homework, and it always gets pushed to the back burner when I’m already busy with planning lessons, grading, running records, parent conferences, etc.
However, I always try to read at least one professional book during the summer. My brain can totally handle it, I’m well rested, and I’m always ready to learn something new. 🤓
I’m SO excited to tell you that I am partnering with my real-life friend, Christina (Mrs. Winter’s Bliss) and we are going to lead an online summer book study on the book Teaching Self-Discipline: The Responsive Classroom Guide to Helping Students Dream, Behave, and Achieve in Elementary School! (you know how much I love a good LONG title!) I know you’ll gain so much by joining us in the study. It’s a book that offers a different approach to classroom management – a topic that is challenging for so many of us.
The book reflects the belief that discipline is a subject that can be taught, just like we teach reading, writing and math. You’ll learn practical strategies for establishing clear expectations and teaching students how to meet those expectations. You’ll also gain tools and techniques for how to respond effectively for when students do misbehave. (I’m looking at you Mr. So and So from this current year, and Miss So and So from last year. 😂) The book is very informative and useful, but also easy to read! It’s perfect for summer!
HOW WILL THE BOOK STUDY WORK?
Each Tuesday I’ll send out an email and share a new blog post that focuses on one chapter in the book. In the post, I’ll summarize the main points, share my thoughts and ideas on the topic, and of course offer you FREEBIES that will support you in that area!
Here’s what you can expect the schedule to look like:
WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO?
Not too much! Go ahead and order yourself the book today and sign up below for my weekly emails (if you aren’t already receiving them!) Then all you have to do is read one chapter a week!
I’d love for you to share your thoughts, ideas, or questions at the end of each blog post. I will also be posting my thoughts on each chapter on my Facebook and Instagram page if you’d rather connect there. I love hearing from you all and think it will be an awesome way to connect and get the conversation going!
I hope you’ll find this to be an enjoyable, low-key and easy way to gain new insights and practical tips that will help you become an EVEN MORE amazing teacher in the coming school year!
Be on the lookout for a new post and email on Tuesday morning, June 25th. We’ll discuss the first chapter which focuses on how we can make safe and predictable learning environments for our students! I think this is going to be AWESOME!!

I just ordered the book. I am in school until the 26th so I won’t be able to catch the first chapter on the 25th. Will it be ok to catch up by the next week?
