Happy Saturday to you!
I had a great week despite the crazy high temperatures. I am thankful my classroom has air conditioning and I am sad for any of you that do not have it.
I wore a dress one day this week and one of our older male teachers said I looked like a beautiful flower.
He just didn’t know that underneath my dress, I was wilting. Badly.
Here’s a peek at my week:
We started our measurement unit in math and my kids are loving it. When they finish their “curriculum worksheet”, I let them grab blank paper and measure whatever they want around the room as long as they draw a picture of it, label it, and record it.
Does this sound like an interactive math journal to you?
I think it does.
Except that it’s copy paper and there is no gluing, and rather than checking it, I am of the mind that they are exploring and this is good for them and it’s the end of the year and a little late to start journals, if you ask me.
Anywho, one day some of my boys got together and decided to measure our back counter. It was so fun to watch them work as a team and to see their roles play out.
“I’ll count this part.”
“I’ll work on this end.”
“I’ll make sure they’re straight.”
“This is my area.”
The girls could not be outdone so they got to work measuring the classroom. As in, the length of the entire classroom linking cubes across the carpet.
Here’s how the girls’ roles played out.
“I’ll do this part.”
“Okay! Thank you! And can I work on this part?”
“Yes! Friend, will you do that part over there?”
“Sure!”
Girls.
I am seriously going to miss this class.
Yes, that’s a bird.
And yes, it’s outside my house.
BUT.
I had heard knocking all evening before going to bed and I assumed it was a tree hitting the window. It was windy, after all. But the next morning I still heard knocking and it wasn’t windy anymore.
So I thought I should check.
And that’s when I saw it.
The Bird.
He wanted in.
Badly.
Knock Knock. Flutter Flutter. Knock Knock. Flutter Flutter.
He would walk super fast across the windowsill and back again.
It was freaking me out and I felt afraid to go outside. Don’t you remember THIS STORY? Warning – if you read it, there is not a happy ending.
Either way, I was afraid this bird visitor was going to dive-bomb me or poop on my head.
You know both things happen in real life.
And I’ve also heard that if a bird poops on your head, you are supposed to let it DRY OUT before trying to clean it up. Because if you try to clean it up when it’s all wet, it gets slimy and even yuckier in your hair.
Just thinking about letting bird poop stay in my hair until it dries out gives me the creeps.
Obviously, this is only if you are not near a shower. Like the one time the girls and I went to Wendy’s on our lunch and a bird pooped on our friend’s head. Yes. And she had to teach for the rest of the day.
I think this is also a reason why I am terrified of birds.
I mean, first of all, it’s hard to teach in the afternoon as it is. Especially after having a Frosty.
But to do it with bird poop in your hair?
Shiver. Shudder. No.
But I had to go into my backyard. Murphie and I play together every morning out back. It is our thing. I read the bible, kick the ball, pray, chase her, read the bible, play tug of war — it’s our thing.
So I opened the door as slowly as I could and wouldn’t you know that bird could fly?
That bird could fly!
I was afraid it was hurt or it couldn’t get back in his nest or or or or . . . well, I don’t know what else, but that bird could fly.
And away he went.
Hallelujah.
I still don’t know what he wanted. Or what he was selling.
The hubby and I recently went to Ikea and spent about $4000 in our heads and left with nothing.
Not even a meatball.
But when I saw their little stools, I wanted them.
Even though I already have stools.
And, I still want them even though Ikea online doesn’t have the colors I want, and even though they are way more expensive on Amazon.
I want them.
They remind me of mushrooms, for some reason.
And they are cute.
Aren’t they cute????!!!!
By the way, I need to take a pic of the stools the hubby painted. You can see them {HERE}. But they don’t look like that anymore . . . which is why I’ve got my eye on these Ikea ones.
Every year, we host a breakfast as a thank you for our school volunteers. Each grade level is in charge of bringing certain items and there is always lots and lots of food.
Every year, is it also super hot. I don’t know why this is.
We eat, we thank our parents, we talk. It is fun.
But this year, the assistant to the superintendent showed up and handed out awards for parents who went above and beyond for a student in need.
Jon.
And I was the first person called up.
Which, let’s be clear, dumbfounded me and kind of had me rooted to the spot.
So I think someone pushed me a little.
They had flowers for me, the award, and a gift (which was the picture frame).
I was in complete shock.
I didn’t take a picture of the flowers because sadly, the heat got to them.
It was so sweet and nice to be recognized, but also absolutely unnecessary.
And, update: Jon is still coming to school every day ALL DAY. ๐
This is Madison. She is my twin’s daughter. My niece. She turned 12 yesterday.
OhMyWord.
Not only is she beautiful on the outside, but she is such a sweetheart on the inside!
She is also hilarious. I started talking in the Tho Tho Thad and Tho Tho Thorry way to my nieces and nephews long before I ever did it on my blog.
Well, Madison created a character using the Tho Tho Tho Way of Talking. And her name is Thuthie Thathafrath (Susie Sassafras) and I die laughing whenever she creates a video.
I’m telling you, I inspire the younger generation.
What? It’s nothing to be afraid of.
Happy Birthday to my sweet sweet sweet Texan niece!!!!!!!!!! Can’t wait to see you in June!
So how was your week? How many more days of school do you have?
We have 7 1/2.
Wow.

Looks like your little birdie friend can see his reflection in the window, and he's just trying to have a little chat! That happens on my office window at work sometimes – when the sun is in just the right spot a little magpie comes and knock-knock-knocks at his reflection. ๐ I don't like birds either – but they are ok when I'm inside and they are outside!

Well, we have 5 1/2….WEEKS! Ugh. I am jealous of you. And let's hope they don't make us make up the 2 days we had off for the fires!

Birds are terrifying! If one was hanging around my window, I just might have called the fire department.
And don't hate me, but our last day with kids was this past Thursday. I'm not complaining.
