Remember how my house was basically under plastic? And how even our very own bubble wrap and packing materials were under plastic? Along with Steve’s iPad and the remote control to the TV?
It was ALL under plastic.
And do you remember the smell?
NO? Well, it smelled like brand spanking new paint and the fumes were killing us.
Plus, when we went to sit on our couch, we couldn’t. Because it was UNDER PLASTIC WRAP.
And then, when we went upstairs to go to bed, our bed was UNDER PLASTIC WRAP.
Well, it feels like it was all just yesterday, but it was actually about a month ago. Or six weeks ago?
I don’t know. Time flies when you’re living in a motel for three days, and then spending the weekend at your friend’s river house all because you can’t go home because there is NOWHERE to sit or sleep.
Even though I’m making it sound like our house was gutted, torn down, rebuilt, and made into something brand new, it wasn’t.
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED:
We had our entire house painted ON THE INSIDE, including trim, doors, and ceilings, and we also had professionals finish all of the baseboards, trim, and window casings that Steve started working on fifteen or so years ago.
I mean, he said he was going to finish all the projects when every single weekend rolled around, but seeing as how it’s year sixteen since he began the project, I began to doubt him.
So besides paint and trim, we had the bases of the kitchen cabinets sprayed, but we got new cupboard doors and drawer fronts. So it’s like we got new kitchen cabinets, but we didn’t. Not really. If that makes sense. It’s called the cheap way to go.
So when we finally came home, we looked around at our brand new, freshly painted house, and then we looked around again, and then we stood back . . .
And tilted our heads . . .
And scratched our heads . . .
And then we looked at each other and said something along the lines of . . . is this BLUE paint?
Because, just so you know, we picked GRAY.
GRAY GRAY GRAY GRAY GRAY.
And we specifically asked the Dunn Edwards paint professional person for a gray color with absolutely no blue or purple undertones whatsoever, and I’m telling you . . .
We are basically living in a baby boy’s nursery from the hours of 9am to 3:00pm or so . . . then the light changes, and as evening approaches, it becomes more gray.
We both admit we were in a big fat hurry to pick the gray paint, and it’s only after the fact that I decided to go on Pinterest and see what the interior decorators/super important paint people/bloggers recommended, and it’s only after the fact that I asked Kerry what gray-paint-family she painted her house . . . and I’m just here to tell you that after the fact just does not help with anything, including that time I lost a student during a fire drill and didn’t have my class roster. You can’t tell me how you handle or print your class roster AFTER THE FACT.
I have a very very very bad habit of just going all in without doing much research whatsoever at all in all kinds of situations. I can’t think of one right off the top of my head, but I tend to be very easy going which means if someone is doing something for me, and they ask how I like it, or is it okay, or what do I think, I’m very quick to nod, say yes, looks good . . . and then later, I’ll start looking at it, or studying it, or using it, and it’s only then {later!} that I start to get a tummy ache and wonder how I’m going to tell the person I need it changed/fixed/repaired/done all over again. And/or I’ll just live with it, but hate it the whole time.
A VERY GOOD EXAMPLE OF THAT IS MAKING ANY KIND OF WEEKEND PLANS AT ALL.
Yes! I want to go! Yes! Sounds like so much fun! Let’s do it! Can’t wait!
AND THEN THE WEEKEND COMES AND I’M LIKE . . . what was I thinking? I don’t want to do this, go there, meet them, nothing. I want to stay home. Why did I ever think I wanted to leave my home? I am a hermit.
SO ANYWHO . . .
We did think we would have them repaint because we were really unhappy. Like, really really really unhappy because it wasn’t like they painted our house for free. We actually gave them hard earned money but the paint color was not their doing. It was our doing and so we were bummed. Obviously.
But then we also realized we don’t like change, and we’ve had the same brown/beige walls for at least fifteen years, and we just aren’t used to the cooler tones going on around here.
To quote Steve: We took our brown and cozy house and turned it into a cool, sterile house.
DYING!!!! He made me laugh so hard. It’s not like we are living in a hospital. I promise.
It’s a baby boy’s nursery. Come on in and cry a little.
So we are getting used to it.
We are surviving.
A silver lining is all the white trim. Holy cow. My house looks so clean. I really need to have people over AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, before it starts to look dirty, but that would require having people over, and I just don’t want to.
Do not feel the need to leave any comments saying you like the gray, or you do see a blue undertone, or anything of the sort. I’m just following up because some people have asked, and I wrote this post for my own personal journal type of entry.
🙂
I would show you pictures of our front room (the formal room we never ever sit in) but we gave all of the furniture away. We actually gave it to our contractor. There is absolutely NOTHING in the front room except Murphie’s crate. So it’s just blue/gray paint in there and that’s all. Blue/Gray paint and the highest ceilings ever.
I’m pretty sure it’s going to be empty for a good long while because we cannot agree on anything!!!!!
So there you go.
A little house update.
🙂

You always make me smile. I just ordered paint samples. Thanks for reminding me that they’ll look different at different times.

Looks amazing! But I agree—paint colors can be hard! I’m a basic taupe person and so far I’ve had pretty good luck!

I’m going through the same thing. I picked out a very creamy butter color. When we actually get direct sunlight, there’s a green cast on my very creamy butter color! I am hesitant to change it because the entry hall, living room, dining room and hallway have all been painted. Maybe I’ll just ignore it.
